Ellora Caves is a UNESCO world heritage site located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. It is an epitome of Indian rock cut architecture. It was designated as World heritage by UNESCO in 1983.

There are 34 Caves, featuring Hindu, Buddhist and Jain monuments and artworks. There are 12 Buddhist (caves 1-12), 17 Hindu (caves 13-29) and 5 Jain (caves 30-34) caves. All caves have been excavated from Charanandri Hills. Caves represents deities and mythologies of respective religion.

Ellora is locally known as ‘Verul Leni’. The Ellora caves are in the Indian state of Maharashtra about 29 kilometres (18 miles) northwest of the city of Aurangabad, 300 kilometres (190 miles) east-northeast of Mumbai, and about 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of the Ajanta Caves.

Ellora caves were built by Rashtrakuta, kalachuri, chalukya and yadava dynasties during 6-9 centuries. Today, Ellora caves along with Ajanta caves, are major tourist attraction in Marathwada region of Maharashtra.
